A Tale of Two Citizens
A People’s Struggle with Housing in the Capital City
Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, Gathering Ground Theatre began collaborating with Tenants Speak Up! Theatre on a new show: A Tale of Two Citizens: A People's Struggle with Housing. Chronicling the story of Angela and Rene as their lives encounter City and State forces, property management, and housing instability in a gentrifying city, the play incorporates real life experiences to engage with themes of displacement and belonging. Once the pandemic hit, we turned to weekly phone calls and adapted our script into a radio play. We streamed our play in conjunction with a virtual panel and week of action beginning November 15, 2020. This project was primarily funded through BASTA and the City of Austin’s Cultural Arts Division.
