We're All We've Got: Messages of Care & Solidarity was created by Gathering Ground Theatre as part of the "ArtsResponders: Social Practice Responds to COVID-19" program sponsored by the Austin Parks and Recreation Department’s Museums and Cultural Programs Division. In the "sunshine zine," we offer poetry, short stories, messages of solidarity and care as well as invitations for readers to create their own work.
In the days following Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, we distributed 600 printed zines to folks experiencing homelessness in collaboration with human service, mutual aid, and advocacy groups including The Other Ones Foundation, Stop the Sweeps, ARCH/Front Steps, Violet KeepSafe Storage, Trinity Center, ATX Street Forum, Challenger Street Newspaper, and Sunrise Church. One reader reviewed, "I like the poetry and the politics. Can I have another one for my friend?" The zine offered us an opportunity for one-on-one conversations and resource sharing with readers and allies. Through this work, we hope burdens may be lessened and connections created will have a ripple effect in these complex times.
